Anne Carlsen is dedicated to helping children and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families enjoy lives of quality and learning at home, at school, and in their communities.

We offer an array of autism services, intervention and support. Building on an impressive history—beginning in the mid-1980s— of cutting-edge care for individuals with autism and related disorders, ACC continues to be a leader in this area.

While serving individuals of all ages, ACC believes in the effectiveness and importance of early intervention to help lead to successful outcomes and make a lasting and profound impact on quality of life.

Autism Services

The Anne Carlsen Center (ACC) provides autism-related services, training and support to individuals and their families in the natural environment of their home and communities throughout North Dakota. Our highly-trained professionals utilize evidence-based methods to maximize skill development for the individuals we serve. All services are tailored to meet the needs and goals of each person and family.

We provide a thorough evaluation for families seeking to determine if their child meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through an interdisciplinary team process. The team includes a pediatrician, behavior support coordinator, occupational theraptist, and speech language pathologist. The evaluation is conducted in a clinical setting utilizing formal and informal assessment tools. Clinics are held in Jamestown at the Anne Carlsen Center and typically last half of a day.

Family members are present during the evaluation to answer questions and offer insight. The team reviews medical, educational and therapeutic records, observes the child as they are playing and interacting with others, and completes an assessment. The team will collaboratively discuss their findings. Families will meet with the team on that same day to discuss the results. Our clinics are held twice a month.

Our Autism Services program has grown substantially over the past few years to meet the needs of people living with an ASD. Our program uses a variety of interventions that are research-based and have been proven to be effective. We use these as a basis when designing programs for individuals with autism. some of these include, but are not limited to:

  • Social Skills Training
  • Visual Supports
  • Functional Behavior Assessment
  • Structured Play Groups
  • Parent-Implemented Training
  • Video Modeling
  • Social Narratives/Stories
Direct services are provided by highly-trained interventionists/skills trainers. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or licensed clinical psychologist provides clinical oversight; ensuring high quality, consistent diagnostics, program plan development and review, and quality assurance.

Our services are designed to meet each individual’s unique needs. We will provide one-to-one programming to develop a client’s independence in daily living skills, increase communication and social skills, work with families to increase their knowledge and skills, increase vocational competencies for transition-age youth and adjust and reduce challenging behaviors. We may also focus on academic and pre-academic skills.

The following services round out our ASD Services program offerings:

  • Education and training for families and professionals
  • Information, referral and family support
  • Summer Social Skills Camps
  • Art classes
  • Family events
Since 2013, North Dakota has provided the ASD Medicaid Waiver and ASD Voucher programs to assist families in getting needed respite care, equipment and/or direct services. To find out how to access these services, please contact on of our offices for more information.
ACC’s mission is to make the world a more inclusive place where independence is a gift to all. As we continue to enhance and expand our ASD Services, we are passionate about equipping and empowering individuals of all ages and their loved ones. Working in partnership with other organizations across the state, we have witnessed countless success stories of independence and hope.
We strive to make our services as accessible as possible. The majority of services are provided in homes in and out of the community, with activities embedded in structured routines within natural environments.

“One of the goals for Watson was to speak ten words. After working with our autism services program, he now speaks in full sentences and has full conversations with his family.”
